In her 36 year career, she saw her area of study grow ever-more politicized in the wake of events like the attack on the World Trade Center. She recently retired from her position at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and joined The 21st to discuss her career, her interactions with students who felt she as a white woman shouldn't be teaching Islamic Studies, and more.
